Ailee off to China to compete in Taiji push-hands.

A month ago Ailee came to Apex with a goal in mind. She was going to China to compete in Taiji push hands and needed to get in condition and make the 56kg weight class. With dedicated training, doing her runs outside of class, doing extra rounds of wrestling after class (often times with men much larger than her), and disciplined eating habits, she was able to reach her goals, losing 12lbs since she started training at Apex! On Sunday she leaves for China to continue her training for a week before her competition. She showed the commitment and work ethic of a true martial artist and combat athlete. We wish her the best of luck! Bring home the gold, Ailee!

“Thanks for all your support and guidance! What started it all was a promise. I was promised that if I came to class at least 3 times a week I would end up with good cardio and I would lose the weight I needed. The friendship, the fun, and the discoveries… those were not detailed in the promise, but was provided anyways because the people at Apex really care about good quality training… all aspects of it.” – Ailee

    Exclusive 11th WWC Clips/Highlights

Finally got around to compiling the various clips we took during our trip to Turkey. The footage is from some of the men’s semi-final matches and all the women and men’s finals. I missed some good parts though, as my camera started overheating. Check it out:

Also, we have some photos in the gallery section.

    11th WWC

Just came back from the 11th World Wushu Championships in Turkey.  It was a really fun experience, and we made many new friends.  Unfortunately, Cass got sick with a cold right before her fight and wasn’t able to perform 100% against her tough opponent from Russia.  But it was a great experience and we’re all very proud of her for representing our team for the first time at World’s.

Someone already created a highlight video of some of the action.  We will post up our own photos and videos soon.

    Five Directions of the World

Our head coach’s sanshou school was featured recently in a news broadcoast.  ”Five Directions of the World” in Republic of Dagestan, Russia.

    Bozigit Ataev

Bozigit “Volk” Ataev  is a world champion Sanshou fighter from the same school (“Five Directions of the World”) as our coach, Sabir Bagautdinov.  With a 17-1 MMA record, he has professional experience in both K-1 and Pride.  He is one of the few who have ever defeated Cung Le, beating him in 1999 at the World Wushu Championships in Hong Kong.

In 2009, he was here in Toronto at the 10th World Wushu Championships where he won Silver for his division.

Here’s a video of him landing a spinning hook kick on current Strikeforce heavyweight champ, Alistar Overeem.
